Opportunities in the media with Irish

Like many people coming out of University with an Arts Degree, I wasn’t sure what my next step would be. I always had an interest in media and journalism, but thanks to the ILBF scheme with NI Screen, I got my foot in the door of production companies creating amazing Irish language content.
Opportunities in the media with Irish

From award-winning films, documentaries, children and factual-entertainment series, the Irish Language media sector is thriving at the moment. And this is thanks to the amazingly talented group of creatives that are working behind the scenes.

Despite working through a worldwide pandemic, I feel there are still high hopes and enthusiasm within the sector, now more than ever - (but maybe I’m a bit biased as someone who works in the industry!)

In the north, the film industry is exploding off the back of successful series like Game of Thrones, Line of Duty and many more, and no doubt, this momentum is being reflected in the Irish Language sector and the dedicated and inspirational production teams working diligently here.

As well as the hard work that goes on behind the scenes, it’s crucial that new talent and ideas are coming to the forefront all the time. It has to be said that groups and organisations like An Dream Dearg, have played a vital role in creating communities that promote creativity and welcome both Irish speakers and learners alike.

Also, none of this would be a reality without funding, thanks to the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, creating jobs and opportunities for people who want to get into the industry.

I was lucky to work with some of the best in the industry and learned more than I could ever imagine in the past few years - but there is still so much more to learn.

For me, like many people coming out of University with an Arts Degree, I wasn’t sure what my next step would be in terms of jobs or careers. I always had an interest in journalism or working in the media, but I had no idea how to go about it.

Like many others who work in the industry, I applied for the entry-level course with the Irish Language Broadcast Fund - and that’s how I took my first step and I am now working in television companies that are creating amazing Irish language content.

I was lucky to work with some of the best in the industry and learned more than I could ever imagine in the past few years - but there is still so much more to learn.

This year on our screens, new shows came to the forefront, from Irish language music programmes to entertainment series like Peataí! and Éadaí SOS that reflect emerging presenting talent and ambition in the sector.

It is certainly an exciting time for the industry and I am looking forward to what is in store in the next few years!
